Volunteers

It takes a lot of effort from many different people to put together a program our children will enjoy and from which they will also reap benefits for a lifetime.

The Northridge Pacers is made up of an executive committee, officers, coaches, parents, and athletes. All of us are volunteers and are pretty much just like you!  Don't be afraid to join in the fun. Many of us started just the same way.

At practice volunteers can,

bullet Run with small groups of kids
bullet Set up blocks for sprinters
bullet Sort and hand out ribbons
bullet Process applications
bullet Sell Pacers articles
bullet Issue uniforms and plan for the upcoming meets

At home meets (those held at CSUN, our home track), we are considered the "hosts" and are responsible for just about everything. We especially need parent volunteers at these meets to:

bullet Set up tables, tent covers, and equipment before the meet
bullet Pull name tags off runners’ uniforms as they cross the finish line
bullet "Stage" children at the starting line (staging involves arranging children by group, i.e., Gremlin Boys, in order of previous times and ensuring an orderly flow onto the track)
bullet Help at the Snack Bar and BBQ (profit from sales is used to purchase uniforms, obtain necessary permits at CSUN and Granada Hills High School, send athletes to Invitational Meets, buy equipment, etc.)
bullet Run the long-jump pit (other team is responsible for one of the two pits), which requires different people to write results, measure jumps, and watch the take-off/landing to ensure jumps are legal
bullet Manage taping of race finishes (video camera, VCR recording)
bullet Review tapes and record finish times for data entry
bullet Enter race finish times and field event results into team database on PC
bullet Take down tent covers and tables, along with boxing up equipment
bullet Clean up - our motto is to always leave it cleaner than when we came!

At away meets, hosted by the other team, we are responsible for hosting two field events and will assist in the running of the 100 meter sprints in order to speed up the meet.

It’s a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that keeps meets running smoothly, and you’re sure to feel like you’ve contributed to something very worthwhile!! In addition, you will be surprised at how quickly the time passes when you're busy. And the more volunteers we have, the quicker the meet goes, and we all get done faster.
