Track and Field Practice Procedures
All practices begin at 6:00 p.m. sharp. Please plan on being 5 or 10 minutes early so that practice can begin promptly. Upon arrival, athletes should jog one or two laps to begin their warm up routine.
If you are new to the sport, or to the team, arriving an extra 5 minutes early will give you more time to become familiar and comfortable with the program. This is also the time to ask any questions you may have regarding the program, or your individual performance. With the number of athletes in the program, it is impossible for the coaches to field individual questions during practice. Please voice your questions, comments, and concerns either before or after practice.
For the first two weeks of practice, we concentrate on conditioning, working usually in Age groups, sometimes together as a group. After the first two weeks, we will start to do more event specific training like sprints, distance running, field events, hurdles, etc.
Practice is held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Until the meets start we also practice Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. All practices are held at Granada Hills High School (Zelzah, south of Devonshire).
All parents are encouraged to join in and run with the team. We, like many youth athletic teams, are always in need of parents to help the coaches help your children. (Coaches are happy to show you how, if you are new to this sport.) Its as good for you as it is for your children!
If you drop your athlete off for practice, please be sure to return five or ten minutes before practice is over, or make arrangements to have someone else do so. Coaches are responsible for waiting with the athlete until the parent arrives, however, it is unfair to the athlete and the coach to keep both waiting.
