Track and Field Meet Procedures
Track season normally includes six regular meets, and a championship meet. Those who qualify at season end may go on to participate in a second championship meet.
The Northridge Pacers usually host one half of the regular season meets, with the other half being hosted by the opposing club. The Schedule will indicate which meets are hosted, or home meets, and which are away. When we host the meet, it can take up to 30 Volunteers to keep the meet moving along and running smoothly. In the week preceding a home meet, you will see sign up sheets available at practice. Please volunteer to assist at these meets. As more people share the work, the load gets lighter on each of us.
All meets start at 8:30 a.m. with the 3,000 meter run, Gremlin boys and girls long jump, Bantam girls high jump, and Midget boys and girls shot put. Each of these events occurs simultaneously. If you are participating in one of these events, you should plan to be at the meet one half hour or more before the meet starts. If the events you are participating in are not held until later in the day, you should check the approximate starting times for each event in the Order of events. The same holds true however, plan on being at least one half hour early for all events during the day. Because of various factors, including weather, size of the various clubs, number of athletes in a given event, etc. starting times are approximate, and cannot be determined with any great degree of accuracy. Some meets run early, others late!
Upon arrival at a meet, see your coach, get signed in, and get warmed up. You and your coach should have decided your events for this weeks meet at practice earlier in the week. We urge every athlete to compete in 3 events and 1 relay at each meet. The maximum number of events allowed by the Valley Conference at any meet is four. Gremlins are allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 events and 1 relay, for a total of 3 events.
During the day, running and field events take place simultaneously. Running events take precedence over field events. First, check in at the field event. After the second call for a running event, check out with the field event judge and proceed to the staging area for the running event. Return to the field event immediately after finishing your race. You have a maximum of 5 minutes to return to complete your field event.
You are normally free to leave after your last event, however, you may wish to check with your coach to see if a fourth is needed for a relay later in the day. Other athletes may need your help to complete their events!
Athletes who compete at least once in each event, for which they are eligible, receive a special award at season end. This trophy is called the Rafer Johnson award, and is in addition to any other awards that the athlete may be eligible for.
Hints for a fun track meet:
1. Please prepare your children for practices and track meets; proper rest, food, and conditioning are essential to insure a healthy child. Avoid milk products and heavy meals two to three hours before practice or competition. A diet high in carbohydrates will provide extra energy (potatoes, breads, fruits, and pastas).
2. Each parent should provide their child the following for each meet:
water and ice towel beach chair or blanket
food or money sweats hat or visor
uniform (not to be worn to practice) sun screen
3. If for some reason, you have left your child, please pick up your children from the meet on time. Children are not permitted to walk home after practice or a meet.
4. Please don't leave your child unattended at track meets. If you must leave, make arrangements with an adult to be responsible for your child.
Conduct
A parent, spectator, coach, or another athlete is never allowed to pace a competitor by running, or taking a position along the track for the purpose of coaching or assisting him or her. The competitor will be disqualified for any such act. Any times given to an athlete will only be done so by the Head Timer at the finish line during the race.
The Valley Youth Conference has one major goal -- to present youth track in a wholesome and competitive environment. Personal conduct of spectators, officials, coaches, and participants must, at all times, be beyond reproach. Physical and verbal abuse will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Adults or participants unable to display acceptable behavior will be directed to leave the competition site by the Meet Director. All involved individuals are advised to carefully consider their words and actions. The stress of competition often brings intemperate behavior. We must keep one thing in mind, our words and actions, if inappropriate, only make children think that it is acceptable. Let's have fun and remember that we're out there for the children.
